Luke Concannon & Stephanie Hollenberg Live at Black Birch Vineyard

‘Luke is one of my three main hero’s along with Van Morrison’ ~Ed  Sheeran

Summer Concert Series

Darlingside Live @ Black Birch Vineyard

presented by Signature sounds presents

TIX: $45 ADV // $50 Door

TICKETS

Everything Is Alive, Darlingside’s fourth LP, marks a subtle but remarkable departure for the Boston-based quartet NPR once described as “exquisitely arranged, literary minded, baroque folk-pop.” While the album retains much of the lushness and sophistication of Extralife (2018) and Fish Pond Fish (2020), the band’s latest work decisively exposes and differentiates the individual voices of the four songwriters—a daring reinvention for a group known for ubiquitous vocal harmonies. Grappling with change both personal and universal, with quandaries domestic and existential, Everything Is Alive is an album about loss and the struggle for a semblance of redemption.

Comprised of Don Mitchell, Auyon Mukharji, Harris Paseltiner and David Senft, four likeminded multi-instrumentalists who first met at Williams College in 2009, Darlingside’s career has been defined by the elegance of their compositions and the unity of their four voices. Their talent for harmony and melodic world-building is part of what garnered praise from outlets like NPR, Rolling Stone and The New Yorker, and what has created demand worldwide for their extraordinary live performances. Becoming beautifully unindividualized has, in other words, worked very well for Darlingside in the past. With a vigor and discipline more common to graduate-level writing workshops than to indie rock, Darlingside has, over the years, experimented with all manners of idiosyncratic methods for elevating and upholding a truly democratic process of songwriting—processes that include multiple rounds of group writing and recording exercises—all with the aim of escaping the trap that bands with multiple songwriters often fall into: ego-driven infighting and artistic incoherence.

A few things to know:

  • Gates open at 5:30 PM, with the headliner taking the stage at 7:00 PM.

  • Enjoy a variety of food trucks on-site.

  • Wine by the glass, non-alcoholic beer, and sodas will be available for purchase.

Deadgrass Live @ Black Birch Vineyard

presented by Signature sounds presents

TIX: $30 ADV // $35 Door

TICKETS

Matt Turk and C Lanzbom joined forces to form Deadgrass, a string band adventure through Jerry Garcia’s musical world. Bassist Dave Richards, banjo player Boo Reiners and fiddler Kensuke Shoji complete this fine group of seasoned pros exploring the life works of Jerry Garcia on the instruments that first inspired him. Deadgrass celebrates and interprets the music of Jerry Garcia, drawing from Old & in the Way, JGB, Jerry’s Jug Band days and the Grateful Dead.

A seasoned recording artist and multi-instrumentalist, Matt Turk is a veteran performer who has performed and recorded with Pete Seeger, opened for Judy Collins, The Doobie Brothers, Fiona Apple and the Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart. He has performed at the Clearwater Festival, Gathering of the Vibes, Atlanta's Music Midtown, Jazz at Lincoln Center and The Beacon Theatre. Matt has recorded for Warner Bros Records with Gaby Moreno & Matter Music.

Grammy award winner C Lanzbom is a touring and studio guitarist with producing, performing, writing and engineering credits with Pete Seeger, Bruce Springsteen, Crystal Bowersox, Shlomo Carlebach and Soulfarm. C's studio, Sherwood Ridge, is a state of the art recording facility just north of New York City. C has numerous television and film song placements.

Bassist Dave Richards performs in Hamilton on Broadway and has recorded and performed with The Indigo Girls, Rosanne Cash, Buster Poindexter, Madeline Peyroux, Jewel and Richie Havens. He has toured throughout Europe, Canada and the USA, appearing at Ottawa Jazz, Toronto Blues festival, The Hollywood Bowl and Austin City Limits. At the age of 17 Dave was playing jazz five nights a week in Orlando, Florida with Billy Peebles, the drummer for Ray Charles on many classic Atlantic recordings.

Banjo player Boo Reiners is a multi-instrumentalist who has performed, recorded, filmed and toured with Dispatch, Phil Lesh, Al Kooper, Pete Seeger, Charlie Louvin, Steve Martin, Tony Trischka, Michael Moore, Amy Poehler, Natalie Merchant, Martin Sexton, and many others. In the studio and on tour with world music pioneers The Klezmatics, he helped the group to win their 2007 Grammy Award for "Wonder Wheel: Lyrics By Woody Guthrie.”

Jazz violinist Kensuke Shoji was born in Gifu, Japan. He joined his father's bluegrass band as a teenager. As a young adult he moved to the U.S.A. to study jazz violin with Berklee String Department chair Matt Glaser, and world renowned violinist Christian Howes.  Dedicated to improvisation, Kensuke moved to New York City in 2013 to play with Alex Hargreaves, Barry Harris, Jacob Jolliff, Maria Muldaur and more.

Heather Maloney Live @ Black Birch Vineyard

presented by Signature sounds presents

TIX: $35 ADV // $40 Door

TICKETS

Massachusetts-based “writer song-singer” Heather Maloney found music in the midst of three years at a meditation center, honing a sound moored in days of silent reflection and reverence for storytellers like Joni, Rilke, Ken Burns, and the anonymous authors of Zen parables. While she eventually traded the quiet, structured life of a yogi for the kinetic life of a touring musician, the core of her songwriting has remained centered around same curiosity about our inner world and the desire to articulate it through storytelling.

With over 1,000 international shows and 8 studio albums under her belt, she is now on the brink of releasing her 9th and most personal record to date, “Exploding Star” (out January 31, 2025). Written in the wake of her father’s death, “Exploding Star” is a collection of 12 songs that Maloney originally had no intentions of recording or releasing until some of her closest friends and family convinced her otherwise.

From tracking for 2 days in her abandoned childhood home, to playing her father’s guitar throughout the record, “Exploding Star” is packed with the sonic, lyrical and emotional details of a life story — and the result is something celebratory and heartbreaking all at once.

With production from Darlingside’s Don Mitchell and arrangements from High Tea’s Isabella DeHerdt and Isaac Eliot, “Exploding Star” is a dynamic listening experience that moves thoughtfully through landscapes that range from lush to sparse — sometimes driving, urgent and cathartic and other times quiet, tremulous and reflective — but always woven together with lyricism that bravely and articulately explores both the darkest depths and the unexpected moments of lightness that grief can bring.A few things to know:

Tuba Skinny Live @ Black Birch Vineyard

presented by Signature sounds presents

TIX: $39 ADV // $45 Door

TICKETS

For over a decade Tuba Skinny has grown steadily in popularity, releasing twelve albums and touring all over the world. They’ve attracted a wide variety of fans- young and old, neophytes and niche-enthusiasts- with the strength of their musicianship and the scope of their jazz and American roots music catalog.

While they’ve become known as world-class interpreters of traditional jazz, over the years they’ve branched out into jug band music, spirituals, country blues, string band music, ragtime, and New Orleans R&B. Their approach is a true reflection of Americana, encompassing the full genealogy of popular American music from an early 20th century perspective.

Despite a general lack of interest in social media and a limited release of their music online, they’ve amassed an enthusiastic digital following.

After a decade of playing (mostly) other artist’s songs, Tuba Skinny decided to fulfill a long-time dream with the release of Magnolia Stroll- their first album of all-original tunes. Featuring compositions from Erika, Shaye, Robin, Barnabus, Craig, and Max, it is their love song to all the musicians, living and dead, who have inspired them, as well as to the neighborhoods of New Orleans that have nurtured them.

A few things to know:

  • Gates open at 5:30 PM, with the headliner taking the stage at 7:00 PM.

Valley Players presents Love Letters (RS from 2/15)

The Valley Players present A. R. Gurney's classic, award-winning play of romance-by-post, Love Letters, for four nights only: on February 7 & 8 and 14 & 15, at 7:30pm, doors open at 6:30 for drinks and light bites by E Silver Charcuterie

Tickets are on a pay-what-you-can scale starting at $15. Half of net ticket proceeds from Love Letters will be donated to River Valley Counseling Center, a nonprofit community-based mental health agency that has been serving the Valley for over 70 years

Simple by design but moving in effect, Love Letters takes the form of two characters sharing the letters they have written each other from kindergarten through their golden years, relating their struggles and triumphs, dreams and fears, and setbacks and second chances. Over the course of the evening, the often complicated, deeply touching, always messy story of their evolving love unfolds against the backdrop of the tumultuous events of the mid- to late-twentieth century.

The Valley Players is an entirely volunteer-run nonprofit group with a mission to enrich the quality of life in the Connecticut River Valley of Massachusetts by producing nimble, meaningful, and accessible community theater. All donations and business sponsorships are tax-deductible and go fully to support the organization’s mission and programming.
